Overview
The United States is committed to cutting carbon emissions by 50% by 2030. This goal cannot be achieved without the deployment of clean hydrogen at a mass scale to facilitate industrial decarbonization and reduce the toll that carbon emissions are taking on our atmosphere.
Project Description
New Fortress Energy (NFE) is undertaking the ground-up construction of what is expected to be one of North America’s largest green hydrogen projects – a 120 megawatt (“MW”) “green” Hydrogen gas production facility that is fully permitted and projected to come on-line by mid 2024. The project is strategically located near Beaumont in the Port Arthur Industrial Complex and will serve as a clean energy power source for many industrial customers located within miles of the facility. The project includes the construction of a logistical network to bring the clean hydrogen product to users, mainly the large oil refineries in the region.
The $160 million budget will fund the installation of twelve 10-MW electrolyzers, an electrical substation, piping, and other related components. Additional construction of rail, dock, road, and other supporting infrastructure will facilitate the offtake and distribution of the completed green hydrogen.

Background
Hydrogen gas is a major source of fuel for the petrochemical industry, which uses the gas to remove sulfur and other contaminants from fuel. In 2020, almost 40 megatons of hydrogen were used for these processes. Demand for hydrogen has grown more than threefold since 1975. Because traditional hydrogen has largely been made from natural gas and other fossil fuels, it has also been responsible for a rise in carbon emissions, contributing an estimated 830 million tons of carbon dioxide each year. As industries face increasing pressure to reduce their carbon footprint with clean energy alternatives, investments in Green Hydrogen production have emerged as key to a cleaner and more secure energy future. According to a market analysis by Straits Research, the global green hydrogen market had an estimated value of $1 billion in 2021 and is projected to reach $72 billion by 2030, growing at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 55% during the forecast period (2022–2030). In addition to worldwide government incentives, large oil companies, industrial conglomerates, global investment firms and sovereign wealth funds (i.e. Singapore’s Temasek and BlackRock), have all committed billion-dollar investments to the green hydrogen market.
Location: Nederland, TX
he facility is strategically located on the banks of the Neches River in Jefferson County, Texas, affording proximity to industrial end-users as well as access to reliable power and superior logistics including rail, marine and existing pipelines that span the U.S. Gulf Coast region.
